About Yalda Night
Yalda Night — Shab-e Yaldā — is the ancient Persian winter solstice gathering, honoring the longest night of the year and the symbolic return of light. Across Iran, families gather at the home of the eldest, often around a korsi, breaking open Pomegranate whose ruby seeds evoke the coming dawn and slicing Watermelon traditionally stored from late summer for this very night. The table glows with Ajil — pistachios, mulberries, figs, dates, and salted watermelon seeds — meant to sustain the long vigil. Many households serve Kadu Tanbal (baked pumpkin sweetened with saffron and rosewater) and Fesenjan, the deep pomegranate-walnut stew with chicken or duck that doubles the night's crimson symbolism. The eldest opens the Divan of Hafez for fal-e Hafez, and Shahnameh tales unfold until past midnight. Kurdish families observe Şeva Çile, Afghan and Tajik Persian-speaking communities mark Shab-e Chella with qabili pulao or osh alongside the shared fruit-and-poetry rhythm, and Iranian diaspora gatherings carry the tradition worldwide — a pre-Islamic celebration, more than three millennia old, recognized by UNESCO in 2022.
