About Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan, observed on the full moon of Shravana (Purnima), is a Hindu festival honoring the sibling bond — sisters tie a decorative Rakhi thread on their brothers' wrists, aarti is performed, and a tilak of vermillion and rice is applied before sweets and gifts are exchanged. Across North India (Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan), festive thalis commonly feature Kaju katli, motichoor and besan Ladoo, pista and milk Barfi, Peda, and warm halwa, alongside savory snacks like samosas, kachori, and Punjabi mathri, often cooled with thandai or rose sharbat. In coastal Maharashtra the same date is also observed as Narali Purnima, where fishermen offer coconuts to the sea and households prepare Narali Bhat (coconut rice). In Nepal, the parallel Janai Purnima sees Newar families simmer Kwati, a nine-bean soup. Across the diaspora — Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, UK, US, Canada — Rakhi boxes of home-style sweets and snacks travel between siblings, reinforcing family ties through shared treats.
