About Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi, the ten-day Hindu festival welcoming the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, transforms Maharashtra into the cultural epicenter each Bhadrapada (August–September), with Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja and Pune's Dagdusheth Halwai mandals drawing devotees by the millions. At the heart of the table sits Modak — Ganesha's beloved sweet — with the steamed Ukadiche Modak, its delicate rice-flour shell hiding warm coconut-jaggery filling, traditionally offered in batches of 21 on day one. Households also prepare Puran Poli, the golden jaggery-and-chana-dal stuffed flatbread, alongside Karanji, Ladoos, and Satori, with fried snacks rounding out the prasad spread shared at neighborhood pandals. Regional variations bloom beautifully: Karnataka families prepare Kadubu and Holige for the Gauri-Ganesha observance, Goan Konkani homes steam fragrant Patoleo in turmeric leaves for Chovoth, while Tamil and Telugu kitchens offer Kozhukkattai, Sundal, and Undrallu. The festival culminates in joyful Visarjan immersion processions on Anant Chaturdashi, sweetness and devotion carried to the water together.
