Pongal
Tamil Harvest Festival
About Pongal
Pongal is the Tamil four-day harvest thanksgiving observed 14–17 January, named for the auspicious moment when milk and rice boil over a fresh clay pot to shouts of 'Pongalo Pongal!' The festival's namesake dish, Sakkarai Pongal (sweet pongal), is traditionally prepared on Thai Pongal day with new-harvest rice, milk, jaggery, cardamom, cashews and ghee, while its savory counterpart Ven Pongal is commonly served alongside, tempered with black pepper, cumin, curry leaf and ginger. Sugarcane stalks and bananas are offered to Surya at sunrise, kolam designs trace doorways in rice flour, and banana-leaf spreads anchor family meals. The arc moves from Bhogi's pre-dawn bonfire of old things, to Thai Pongal's Sun worship, to Mattu Pongal's garlanded cattle and Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, closing with Kaanum Pongal family visits. Traditional Tamil sweets such as adhirasam, payasam and kesari often round out the table, and the festival is observed with equal warmth among Sri Lankan Tamil communities in Jaffna and the Eastern Province, and across the Tamil diaspora from Singapore's Little India to Toronto, Kuala Lumpur and Mauritius.
